Daylight from the skylight passes down each rod and leaves at the cut end, putting the field of light at hundreds of different heights instead of on one plane. KEATON drops slim glass rods in ordered rows beneath a skylit courtyard ceiling, each rod cut to its own length. Seen from below the rows are strict; seen from the side the ends resolve into a soft, uneven horizon.

Slim glass rods hang on a regular grid from a concealed frame, spaced evenly in both directions so the plan of the piece is strict. The variation is entirely vertical: every rod is cut to a different length, and nothing else about the arrangement changes.
That single decision is what makes it work under daylight. Sun from the skylight passes down the length of each rod and leaves at the cut end, so the field of light sits at hundreds of different heights instead of on one plane, and the piece reads as depth rather than as a ceiling treatment.
